To say the debut album from Artificial Intelligence has been a long
time coming's an understatement. In some ways it's been an understandable delay as the global demand for Glenn and Gambit as DJs never stops. But now the time is nigh, preceded by this killer, essential 12 on Bryan G's peerless V recordings.
'Three's A Crowd' kicks off with that hands-down clarion call,
slamming vibe that only AI can muster, EPIC is the word, as the kings
of widescreen, cinematic D&B step forward with a drop that sends
shivers down the spine, topped off by a super emotive, fragile vocal
lick by none other than dBridge. On the topic of Bridge's vocals, one
wonders if he's inspired by his brother, the enigmatic Steve Spacek,
as the bittersweet vibe is common to both. 'Three's A Crowd'
rightfully takes it's place up there in the Hall of Fame Of AI
Smashers along with dancefloor killer 'Days of Rage', 'Movin On' (last
tune ever played at Swerve at The End, trivia fans!), 'Uprising',
'Bloodlines', 'Desperado'... oh my gosh these guys know no other way
but to flatten all in their path.
This bulldozing trend continues with the flip, 'Blind Eye' which manages to be sultry, liquid, rolling and sensuous all at once. Heads-down business, underpinned by a super-infectious and somehow inverted b-line and a skillfully poised vocal from DRS. All in all this is pure class, it's D&B on a massive scale. If you only think of Fresh, Sub Focus, Pendulum or Drumsound & Bassline Smith as masters of the BIG style of D&B then you should get to know AI. If you're a fan, you'll already know: just get this in the box rather sharpish.
