Yet another coup for the Plus Ultra dons dBridge and Instra:mental as
they are joined by none other than Skream (on 'Acacia Avenue'). If you
aren't familiar with the Plus Ultra sound then you need to get
yourself over to the joys of club-autonomic.com asap and fix up... and word for the faithful is that the final two layers aren't so far off.
So, 'Acacia Avenue', what can we expect, especially with the one like Skream stepping up? Some may have hazy memories of his birthday set down at Plastic People some time back, stepping on after Bridge and Instra themselves, promptly dropping the mighty 'Voyeur'. The point? Here was one of the key moments where an innovative style of d&b, all downtempo and icy clashed so well with the world of Dubstep, the results sounding like neither.
And that's the case here: 'Acacia Avenue' is pure class: sooo laidback, no effort in it's step and pure ghetto in it's menacing swagger, creeps up and drops THAT squiggly Moog hook from nowhere, smashing floors to pieces.
'Detroid' on the flip smoothly rolls in from a different dimension, ice-cold and robotic, before unleashing that ten-ton signature bass-synth that fans of Plus Ultra and particularly dBridge will know so well. Subtle sheets of over-compressed electronic weirdness abound alongside distant distorted 80s guitars at one stage, setting the scene. It's pure head-nodding, rolling deepness, ready to hurt the faithful and seduce newcomers with this remarkable sound.
