Was Brazillian master killer SPY the man of the moment for much of
2009? Along with being blown out of the water by the crazy filth of
'ASBO' on SOUL:R we saw him being drawn time and time again as prime samurai material on Radio 1's D&B show with his signature tough, merciless take in the beats dept in particular: just the beats alone were enough to make you stand up, take notice.
Now on the remix tip here, 'It's OK' is as effortless as the title suggests, straight down to business with a clanging swagger reminiscent of a hot night out with the boys from Full Cycle in that it has something of that Bristol cool (in spades) about the vibe: Krust would love the heads-down dirty casual menace of the riff for a start. How to match? How about calling in another heavyweight in the shape of Serum, on the flip? 'The Execution' gathers up all that's infectious about the recent emergence of what you may refer to as 'gully junglists' beloved of Fabio (think: Vapour, Jaydan and Bladerunner)... blistering, bumping old skool b-line, and renegade Amens running red, skittering, fluttering and filtering, implying a genuine master at the dials. Interestingly the tune feels like it may go 4/4 but stops short. As a result the right restraint is given. 'The Execution' then is as ice cold as the title suggests, a lesson in restraint. Merciless!
